2010 Labor Scholars Retreat a Success!

 On Saturday, March 6, 2010, labor scholars from around the country and faculty from the Los Angeles Community College district converged at a retreat held at Los Angeles Valley College to collaborate on ideas for advancing labor studies in the community colleges.  The program included special lectures by high profiles guests and a breakout session facilitated by labor and community organizers.

Speakers included Bill Fletcher, Jr., Mike Davis, Dolores Huerta, Kent Wong and Nelson Lichtenstein.  Introductions were given by Joanne Waddell, AFT Chapter President from Los Angeles Valley College, AFT 1521 President, Carl Friedlander and Los Angeles Trade-Technical College Labor Center Director, John McDowell.

The 2nd Biennial Labor Scholars Retreat March 6, 2010 at LAVC

Featuring invited speakers historian Nelson Lichtenstein, urban theorist Mike Davis, labor scholar and activist Bill Fletcher, and icon Dolores Huerta.

An opportunity for LACCD faculty and several of the top labor scholars in the country to meet and discuss ideas around teaching labor in the classroom. Space will be limited to 30 LACCD faculty.

Last retreat led to the creation of our nationally acclaimed “Primer on Teaching Labor Studies.”

Dear Faculty, Students, and Staff,

 

The Getty Center will be hosting a free special photo exhibit and event focusing on "The Worker" and presenting a photographic history of working people across cultures.  More than 40 prints are drawn from the museum's special collection and reveal the shifting attitudes towards working people through the 19th and 20th century.
