Presented by the UCLA Labor Occupational Safety and Health (LOSH) Program SAFETY D A hands-on, interactive, and fun training empowering workers to take leadership roles in promoting health and safety in the workplace.
WHO: Worker leaders and advocates looking to obtain basic health and safety knowledge to apply at their workplace.
WHAT: You’ll get a free health and safety course binder, a chance to share ideas and strategies with workers from other industries, and a certificate of completion as a WOSH Specialist.
WHEN: April 27, 28, & 29, 2010. 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM

UCLA offers a Labor Studies Minor with close to 100 students enrolled! Over 350 students took our courses last year; where they analyzed workplace issues and the social, political and economic forces that influence it!
UCLA houses the Community Programs Office, where hundreds of student activists coordinate nationally renown student-initiated, student-led community service projects and student groups dedicated to the pursuit for social justice!
400+ potential employees, interns and volunteers attended last year!

Labor History Exhibition Opening Reception
Come celebrate Labor History Week at the opening reception of the special showing of California labor history and art. The first week of April in California is Labor History Week. Signed into law as AB 1900 (Nakano) in 2002, its purpose is to encourage schools "to commemorate this week with appropriate educational exercises that make pupils aware of the role the labor movement has played in shaping California and the United States." The exhibition features panels from the California Labor History Exhibit* and posters from the project Tradeswomen Across the Next Generation (TANG).** It will run through May 7, 2010.
Sponsored by the 13th District Council Office of Council President Eric Garcetti, AFT Local 1521, UTLA Local 1021, California Federation of Teachers, Cal State Dominguez Hills Labor Studies Department, the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, and the Dolores Huerta Labor Institute of the Los Angeles Community College District. Posters were funded by the California Council of the Humanities Story fund.

2010 Labor Scholars Retreat a Success!
On Saturday, March 6, 2010, labor scholars from around the country and faculty from the Los Angeles Community College district converged at a retreat held at Los Angeles Valley College to collaborate on ideas for advancing labor studies in the community colleges. The program included special lectures by high profiles guests and a breakout session facilitated by labor and community organizers.
Speakers included Bill Fletcher, Jr., Mike Davis, Dolores Huerta, Kent Wong and Nelson Lichtenstein. Introductions were given by Joanne Waddell, AFT Chapter President from Los Angeles Valley College, AFT 1521 President, Carl Friedlander and Los Angeles Trade-Technical College Labor Center Director, John McDowell.
