Join us for a Job and Social Services Resource Fair at LA Trade-Technical College. The event is sponsored by Assembly Speaker Karen Bass and Senator Curren Price, as well as teh Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, the Los Angeles Urban League West Adams, the Baldwin hills Worksource Center and the Crenshaw Employment Development Department.

In the Heart of Another: Immigrant Women Tell Their Stories." The book tells the stories of eight women from five countries (three are mother daughter stories): Armenia, China, El Salvador, Mexico and Vietnam. The women talk about their lives before coming here, what brought them here, and their lives once here. Author Susan Philips will speak to students at Valley College.
Female Labor Leaders Speak to Students and Faculty at LA Valley College
On October 12, 2009, three women labor leaders came to LA Valley College to talk to students about womein in the labor movement. The speakers were Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Cal State University Dominguez Hills, Vivian Price, SEIU Local 721 Chief of Staff Raahi Reddy, and President of UFCW Local 1428 and International Vice President Connie. M. Leyva. Students and faculty attended the event.
The event was organized by LA Valley College student Lupe Bulgara who will be transferring to UC Santa Cruz this winter.

2010 Labor Scholars Retreat
Please join us for our second Labor Scholars Retreat. Los Angeles Community College faculty participating in this event will be able to work collaboratively with authors, researchers and other labor studies scholars such as Nelson Lichtenstein, Kent Wong, Peter Dreier and many others to discuss and come up with effective strategies for teaching labor studies at the Los Angeles Community Colleges. Some key topics to be addressed are teaching about labor and African Americans and teaching labor studies during the current economic crisis.
This event will involve exciting presentations by renowned scholars and labor activists and facilitated small breakout sessions. Attendees who commit to teaching labor studies in their curriculum will also receive hard copies of the 2010 edition of the DHLI Primer on Teaching Labor Studies at the Community Colleges. There will be a limited number of hard copies and we will be reserving them for participants of the Retreat.
The Retreat will be held at Monarch Hall on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at LA Valley College. Please RSVP to attend. Space is limited.

Director/Producer Lyn Goldfarb Speaks to Students at Harbor College
Award-winning Producer and Director, Lyn Goldfarb spoke to students at Harbor College on September 22, 2009 about her award-winning documentary, “The New Los Angeles.”
Lyn answered a variety of excellent questions from students about the making of the film, to the issues presented in the film and how these issues are dealt with today.
This excellent event was made possible by the efforts of Harbor College faculty, Ellen Joiner and Bill Loiterman.
